Knock on Wood

flooring

It’s a staple of home remodeling programs and a feature of homebuying shows: the unexpected wood floor. Who wouldn’t (woodn’t?) want to find beautiful hardwood floors tucked under all that old carpeting?

If you’re feeling curious, there are a few ways to get an idea if you’ve got some hidden hardwood. First, try going to your basement & looking upward at the underside of the floor; most hardwood is tongue-and-groove. If you’ve got them, heat registers are another spot to take a sneak peak at what’s underneath; remove them and you’ll get a look at what’s under that carpet.

Or you could take the easiest (and most fun) route: enter to win new floors. We’ve teamed up with Giant Floor to give away new flooring, and it’s pretty easy to win. You can fill out the coupon you’ll find in any issue or Paper Shop, like us on Facebook or purchase an online subscription, and – voila! – you’re automatically entered.

So knock on wood (or laminate. Or tile.) that you’ll be the winner we draw on May 23.

No Fooling: April At Last!

April

It’s National Poetry Month. And National Guitar Month. Don’t forget that April’s National Welding Month, too. It brings us Arbor Day and Earth Day. And we’ve got our prom giveaway coming up in just a few days. So, really, what’s not to like?

Crocus buds aren’t the only thing growing – so are our Lawn & Patio, Lawnmower, Motorcycle & Boat categories. And while we’re bidding winter a not-so-fond farewell, remember that now’s the time to get some great deals on the winter goodies, since folks just don’t want to store them for the upcoming season; look for some real steals on snowmobiles and snow blowers!

We’re also got some great giveaways in the works. Keep up with us on Facebook or catch us every Saturday at 9am as we bring you Paper Shop Live! on NEPA’s ESPN Radio.

The modern word for carpet comes from the Latin carpere, meaning “to pluck”. In the days of the Romans, carpeting was made from unraveled, or plucked, fabric. So the word for carpeting has the same root as “carpe diem”, which means seize (or pluck) the day.

That said, here’s our advice to you: carpet diem. Because you can seize some new carpeting and you can do it today! We’ve teamed up with Giant Carpet to give away free flooring, and it’s free & easy to enter. If you’ve liked us on Facebook? Entered. Purchased an online subscription? You’re in. You can fill out the entry you’ll find in any print issue of Paper Shop (or stop by our office to fill one out) and – bingo! – you’re entered to win.

Prom with Aplomb

Prom

It’s said that every journey begins with a single step; even so, it’s odd to think that one of the culminating events of the High School experience takes its name from a simple walk.

You might have already guessed that Prom is a shortened form of the word promenade, but did you ever wonder what a stroll has to do with the fancy dress, DJ’s & limos of today’s formal dance? The prom as we know it evolved from the debutante balls formerly thrown by upper-class families to introduce their daughters to society. At these highly formal events, the young women made a formal entrance – a promenade. The affairs were considered an introduction to early adulthood, so it’s not really all that surprising that the notion mutated into a formal dance that’s become part of the American experience.

The average prom-goer spends just over $1000 on that night. Yikes! Lots of cash, sure, but it is a night to remember, right? We’d like to help with that: we’re giving away a tuxedo rental from Men’s Wearhouse and 2 gift certificates for a hair updo & makeup application at The Sapphire Salon. Want to win? Just fill out the coupon in every issue of Paper Shop (p. 52 in this week’s issue) or email us at schools@thepapershop.com with your name, address, phone number & high school.

Forward, March!

March

We’re hoping that it comes in like a lion! There, we said it. We’re willing to handle that roar as long as March goes out like a lamb.

All told, it’s a pretty exciting month:  St. Patrick’s Day, March Madness, and – most excitingly – our flooring giveaway. We’ve teamed up with Giant Floor to give away $2000 in brand new floors, and we’ll be drawing the second of three winners on March 28th.

We’ll continue to seize the airwaves every Saturday to bring you Paper Shop Live! so tune in to see what’s for sale, what’s been sold and what kind of on-air giveaways we’ve got. We’ll be kicking off March’s broadcasts with the last of our Snö Mountain lift ticket giveaways this Saturday, so tune in and win! You can catch us on NEPA’s ESPN radio network: 96.1 & 100.1FM or 630 & 1240AM

February Predictions

groundhog

Here’s hoping for a shadow-free Saturday.

We’ve got our fingers crossed, but it really is all up to Punxsutawney Phil. The tradition holds that if he sees his shadow, we’re in for six more weeks of winter. If it’s cloudy and there’s no shadow, spring is just around the corner. Us? We’re firmly in the spring-just-around-the-corner camp.

February is just about here, and it’s going to be an exciting month! We’ve got the first of three flooring giveaways on February 14 and we’re already lining up giveaways for February broadcasts of Paper Shop Live.

Help us kick off the second month of 2013 in style: shadow or not, join us on Saturday morning at 9 for Paper Shop Live! Better yet, call the show and tell us about what you’ve got. Even if you don’t currently have an ad with us, you are welcome to call the show and talk about what you’d like to sell: 1-888-303-0630

Snowed In!

skis

No bones about it – it’s been cold. Freezing, even. You might not love winter weather, but we’re doing our very best to help change your mind. After all, January is Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month. So put on that winter jacket and let’s get you out on the snow!

If you happened to catch this morning’s broadcast of Paper Shop Live! you got a chance to win some gift certificates for Snö Mountain. We’re also giving away a blizzard of lift tickets over the next week. They’re easy to win: you’ll be automatically entered either by reporting a sale or by liking us on Facebook. Or you could double your chances and do both!

Whether you’re a seasoned skier or someone who’s not yet tackled the bunny slope, we’re partnering with Snö Mountain to get you on the slopes.

Facebook & Twitter

facebook

We’re rather liked. And we’re followed, too.

If you haven’t yet checked out Paper Shop on Facebook & Twitter, you might want to. It’s not only a fun way to keep up with us, but also a chance to get in on exclusive online giveaways. We also give a heads-up when it comes to what we’ll be giving away on air on Paper Shop Live!. Whether it’s concert tickets, hotel accommodations or passes to a local ski resort or water park, we’ve always got something in the works. And chances are we’re either giving it away on Facebook or using social media to give you the inside track on how to win.

And it’s not just the giveaways that make it worthwhile: we keep a close eye to keep us pretty easily accessible to you. Message us on Facebook or Tweet at us and we’re happy to respond. Questions? Comments? Suggestions? Tell us! We’re always listening. And that, my friends, gets a thumbs-up!

Giveaways! This time? New flooring!

flooring

Who doesn’t like giveaways? Nobody, that’s who. Everyone likes to win free stuff, and we love to give away free prizes throughout the year.

We went a little wild with the giveaways during the summer of 2012 with dozens of concert tickets, courtesy of Live Nation Entertainment. We also gave away free hotel rooms in conjunction with Courtyard  by Marriott. Rifles. Tires. Generators. Quite a bit of cash. There’s not much that we won’t give away to our readers.

Right now we’ve got another sweepstakes in the works: Paper Shop and Giant Floor will be giving away $2000 worth of free flooring. Whether it’s laminate, hardwood or any other kind of new flooring, we’re ready to help you get your home improvement remodeling started!

It’s free and easy to win: just fill out the coupon in every issue of Paper Shop. Or “Like” us on Facebook. Or purchase on online subscription. When you do any of these, you’re automatically entered to win.
