Calling Attention

Cell Phones

Sometimes placing an ad online is just the way to go. It’s simple, straightforward and fast. And occasionally even the most outgoing folks among us just prefer the businesslike efficiency of using the internet to get things done.

But there are other times when you just need human input. Maybe you’re unclear about the kinds of ads we offer or you’re unsure how, exactly, to word that ad. Perhaps you’d like to check on the status of the ad or would simply feel more comfortable if you could hear the finished advertisement read back to you.

We get it. And we’re more than happy to help. We’re on the phones from 8 AM until 6 PM Monday through Thursday and from 8 AM to 5 PM on Fridays. Reach us locally at 570-969-3100 or toll-free at 1-800-537-9377.

Can we have a word with you? How about 30?

Words

They say that less is more, and in some cases it’s certainly true. We’re happy to take your straightforward, pared-down ad. In fact, all you really need to do is tell us what you’re selling and include a price and phone number.

But sometimes the devil is in the details, and you need to include specific facts about the item. And sometimes you just feel like it takes a little more information for people to truly appreciate your item. We get that.

Commission ads have a limit of 30 words. We’re more than happy to work with you to fit everything you’d like to say into your ad; each of our representatives has years of experience getting your description into those 30 words. If you’d like to get wordier, we can help with that, too. It’s just $2 for every 10 words over 30.

Speedy!

stopwatch

In 30 minutes, you could burn around 120 calories playing Frisbee. If you were a cheetah, you could run about 30 miles. We’re not ones to boast about our Frisbee or cheetah skills (because, well, they’re non-existent), but we do manage to do some pretty impressive stuff in half an hour!

When you place an ad with us, we get that ad posted on thepapershop.com within 30 minutes of receipt. Whether you get that ad to us over the phone or by using our website, we really get cracking on it and get it out there as soon as possible. And if you consider that a large percentage of the items that are sold are done so by the online ads, our speed is pretty darn important. Don’t forget, too, that any updates or additions also appear within 30 minutes.

FAQ: Why do you ask for my phone number first?

Question mark

Questions. We love ‘em. When somebody has a question for us here at Paper Shop, we know that they’re either already advertising with us or thinking of giving us a try. We’re happy to help with and all inquiries, and we’ve found that a number of them are, well, frequently asked questions. Here’s where we take some time to talk about them.

We’d like to tell you that we ask for your digits because you’re simply too charming to resist, but we’d be lying (though we’re sure your charm is off the charts). We do it for a few reasons, most notably for ease in quickly locating your account.

It’s funny how last names tend to run the gamut from the difficult to pronounce (and spell!) to the strikingly common. By looking you up on our system using your phone number, we bypass both spelling confusion and the large number of, say, John Smiths that we’ve got on record. It also enables us to easily make sure that we’ve got the correct and current phone number for you.

FAQ: What if I have a bunch of things I’d like to sell together?

It might be a living room set. Maybe it’s parts from a classic car. Perhaps it’s a collection of some sort. No matter the circumstances, it’s not all that unusual for us to run an ad that lists a number of items for one price.

Because of the way commission ads are set up, we must list one total price for the all items in that type of ad. Sometimes it’s as simple as selling the items as a package deal. Other times, though, the seller might be willing to sell the items piece by piece – and there’s a pretty neat way to handle that. By listing a price for all the items and adding “or will separate” afterwards, we’re able to charge for the parts of the ad as they are sold.

Example: a seller has 300 vinyl records, and wants to sell them at different prices. When we include an asking price of, say, $500 All, or will separate, the seller can report the items as they are sold and we’ll charge the commission accordingly. If some of the records were sold for $50, we’d charge the $5. commission on the sold stuff and readjust the ad to only include the remaining items.

You know we’re always here to help, and it never hurts to inquire about the most effective way to advertise (and sell!) you items.

Word.

Words

Shakespeare said that brevity is the soul of wit. The Bard may have had a point. Then again, old William was likely not placing an ad for a detailed item.

We allow up to 30 words in every commission ad. For the more concise among us (and for certain items), that’s more than enough. Sometimes, though, an item defies description in a mere 30 words. While we’re able to do some rather fancy footwork to keep an ad within the word limits, there are occasions when there just remains more to be said.

We get it. And that’s why we offer the chance to put as many words in the ad as you’d like; it’s  just $2 for every 10 words over that initial 30 words.  Just ask about it when you’re placing an ad on the phone or simply click “Yes!” next to “Extra Word Fee” when you’re submitting an ad on thepapershop.com.

Thursday is the day. The time? High noon. Sorry if we seem a little bit dramatic, but that particular date & time is a big deal to us: it’s the weekly deadline for display advertising.

If you take a moment to page through any copy of Paper Shop, you’ll see display ads in a variety of sizes. We offer everything from a 1-column (wide) by 1″ (tall) ad to full-page, full-color advertising. FAQ: How do you figure out the commission fee?

Question mark

Questions. We love ‘em. When somebody has a question for us here at Paper Shop, we know that they’re either already advertising with us or thinking of giving us a try. We’re happy to help with and all inquiries, and we’ve found that a number of them are, well, frequently asked questions. Here’s where we take some time to talk about them.

As you probably know, commission ads are our most popular kind of ads. You might also already know that the commission fee comes due when the item is sold. But do you know how, exactly, we get that number?

For the sake of consistency, we base the commission on the printed asking price of the item (something to keep in mind when bargaining with a potential buyer). It’s 10% of the first $100 and 3% of the balance over $100. So if you’ve got an item listed for, say, $200, the commission on that item would be $13: $10 for that first $100 and $3 for the remaining $100 of the price. A $300 item would carry a commission of $16. A $400 item? $19.

There is a maximum commission charge of $70. So anything advertised for $2100 or more – whether it’s $2100, $21,000 or $21,000,000 – will have a commission of $70.

FAQ: When will my ad appear?

Question mark

Questions. We love ‘em. When somebody has a question for us here at Paper Shop, we know that they’re either already advertising with us or thinking of giving us a try. We’re happy to help with and all inquiries, and we’ve found that a number of them are, well, frequently asked questions. Here’s where we take some time to talk about them.

You’ve done it! You either called in an ad or went to thepapershop.com to submit your advertisement. First things first: thank you! Second things: when will that ad go into print and appear on the website?

We’ll start with the easy answer: every single ad we get appears on thepapershop.com within 30 minutes of placement. In other words, you could begin to get calls about your item within half an hour.

Any ads we get before our 11 AM Friday deadline go into print for the following Wednesday.  After each deadline we immediately begin putting together the next issue, so ads placed after deadline go into print for the Wednesday after that.

Remember that we’re always happy to tell you specifically when your ad will go into print – just ask. Remember, too, that you’re welcome to call in ads on Paper Shop Live! where you can talk about the item on air with as much detail as you wish.

FAQ: What if I want to change an ad I’ve placed?

They say the only constant is change, and we’d have to agree.  So what happens if you’ve already got an ad running with us and you feel like making some changes – can that be done? Short answer: yes! If you’d like to lower the asking price on your item or maybe change the wording a bit, we can do that. At any time.

You’re welcome to call our office at 1-800-537-9377 to tweak your ads over the phone, or you can even change things up using “Change or Correct an Ad” on thepapershop.com (you’ll find it at the bottom of the page).
